Concept
Every human being who has ever lived has left a mark on the Temenos. Stories told around fires, gods named in prayer, monsters whispered about in the dark all persist as living patterns in the Collective Unconscious, sustained by the accumulated weight of human belief. Most mages treat these entities as curiosities, byproducts of Sleeping minds too weak to shape reality alone. The Egregori recognize the Temenos as the Fallen World's shadow of the Supernal, and the archetypes dwelling within as degraded reflections of truths that existed before the Exarchs raised the Abyss.
The Egregori channel Supernal energy through these archetypes, temporarily restoring the unity the Lie shattered. The manifestations they summon from the Collective Unconscious arrive as partners, aspects of a shared consciousness that includes the summoner. Calling forth the Warrior calls forth the part of the summoner that has always been the Warrior, and the part of everyone who has ever stood their ground.
Founded within the Free Council, the Egregori embody the Order's radical proposition: that Sleepers are the source of magic itself. If the Collective Unconscious generates entities of Supernal resonance, then humanity has never been separated from the Supernal Realms. The Egregori intend to tear the Lie down.
Doctrine
The Egregori's philosophy rests on three tenets, each a direct challenge to the Pentacle's orthodox understanding of Awakening and the Lie:
The Mask Reveals the Face. Every god, hero, and monster dwelling in the Temenos is humanity telling itself something true about the Supernal. The Sleeping mind apprehends that truth instinctively and cannot articulate it. The mage who summons an archetype gives voice to a reality that billions of souls have always known.
We Are the Sleepers Dreaming the Dream. Awakening is the human condition's fulfillment, not its transcendence. The Egregori reject the notion that Sleepers are lesser beings stumbling through a diminished world. Sleepers together sustain the Temenos and every archetype in it; the collective weight of human consciousness already generates patterns indistinguishable from Supernal truth. A Sleeper and a mage differ only in awareness.
Break the Cycle. The Exarchs perpetuate a system in which humanity remains divided from its own magical nature. Like any tyrant, they maintain power by convincing their subjects that freedom is impossible. The Egregori seek to shatter this cycle through demonstration. An archetype summoned where Sleepers can see it cracks the Lie, and a Sleeper who glimpses the Temenos is one step toward a world where Awakening is the birthright.
Detractors within the Pentacle — particularly among the Mysterium and the Guardians of the Veil — consider the Egregori dangerously naive. Summoning Temenos entities risks Paradox escalation in the presence of Sleepers, and the Legacy's ultimate goal of mass Awakening threatens the carefully maintained balance between the Supernal and the Fallen. The Egregori counter that the "balance" their critics defend is simply the Exarchs' preferred status quo.
The Left-Handed Question
The Pentacle formally classifies the Egregori as Right-Handed. The Guardians of the Veil keep an open file anyway.
Left-Handed Legacies are defined by practice that requires Wisdom violations to function: consuming souls, stealing Mana, unmaking identity. The Egregori's attainment chain — perceive the Collective Unconscious, armor yourself in it, summon a willing partner from it, wear its patterns, add to it — is self-directed or consensual at every rung. The summoned Goetia are partners who can refuse and leave. The Illumined Path grants Sleepwalker attunement without anyone calling it Left-Handed, and the Egregori's capstone rests on that precedent.
The Guardians' file concerns the optional Mind components. With Mind 3 a mage can pull an archetype out of a specific person's Oneiros — their Shadow, their buried grief — and give it flesh, with nothing but a single Clash of Wills standing between the subject and the exposure. With Mind 4 she can overlay an archetype onto an unwilling person, which is personality modification, an Act of Hubris on any Wisdom chart in print. Mind 5's gift of permanent Temenos attunement is offered as liberation, and "I know what you need better than you do" is how every paternalist in the Fallen World opens. The doctrine sharpens the worry: "we all matter and none of us matter" consoles, and it also rationalizes. A mage who believes individual identity is a mask over shared being can talk herself into removing someone else's mask for them and call the violation mercy.
The Egregori's rebuttal is on file with the Consilium: every Legacy that touches another mind rides this edge, and the question is not whether the tools can be misused but whether the hand that holds them keeps its Wisdom.
Theory & Practice
The Egregori use Prime to invest Temenos Goetia with physical substance. Orthodox summoning practices require Mind to contact Goetia and Spirit or Death to grant them material form. The Egregori bypass this requirement by recognizing Temenos archetypes as patterns of Supernal resonance rather than ephemera. Prime manipulates the substance of magic itself; investing Mana into an archetype's Pattern grants it solidity in the same way that Prime magic sustains a Hallow or charges a Tass. The entity does not Materialize through the Spirit's Manifestation Conditions. It is woven into physical reality from Supernal light.
In practice, the summoning is an act of communion rather than a command. The mage opens herself to the Temenos, identifies the archetype most resonant with her need, and channels Prime energy through the connection to give it form. The summoned entity acts cooperatively but independently, a manifestation of shared consciousness, and it may refuse commands that violate its archetypal nature. The bond is shared identity: I art thou, thou art I.
Higher-level practitioners learn to internalize archetypes directly, overlaying an entity's Pattern onto their own and becoming, for a time, avatars of the Collective Unconscious. The most advanced Egregori create new archetypes: permanent entries in the Temenos.
Yantras
The following Yantras may be used by Egregori when casting spells (not attainments). Each provides a bonus to spellcasting dice pools as indicated.
- Archetypal Mask (+1): A physical mask representing a specific Temenos entity, whether crafted, painted, or digitally fabricated. The mask need not be worn; holding it while casting suffices.
- Collective Signal (+1): Technology connecting the mage to the Collective Unconscious in real time: a live social media feed, a crowd-sourced data stream, an open radio broadcast, or a packed group chat.
- The Crowd's Presence (+2): Performing magic while physically surrounded by Sleepers who are unaware of the casting. Subway cars, concerts, rallies, sporting events, and protests all qualify. The Sleepers need not participate; their presence as living nodes of the Collective Unconscious is sufficient.
- Grimoire of Encounters (+1): A personal journal recording the mage's interactions with Temenos Goetia: sketches, dialogue, behavioral observations, and taxonomic notes organized by archetypal classification.
- The Egregori Mantra (+2): Reciting "I art thou, thou art I — we are the dream that dreams itself" in High Speech while performing mudra-like gestures that trace the Atlantean glyph for "collective."
Oblations
- Participating in collective creative expression: performing music with others, contributing to a community art project, teaching a workshop, or collaborating on open-source software.
- Meditating while immersed in crowd energy: riding a packed subway, sitting in a stadium during a game, occupying a public square during a demonstration, or standing in a Times Square crosswalk.
- Cataloguing Temenos entities through systematic analysis: writing case studies of archetypal encounters, mapping patterns across cultures, or maintaining a comparative mythology database.
- Creating a new cultural artifact intended to resonate widely: publishing a manifesto, releasing music, uploading something made to be shared, or contributing to a communal narrative.
- Holding a vulnerable conversation with a Sleeper about universal human experiences (love, death, purpose, belonging, fear, or hope) without magical coercion or manipulation.
Attainments
The mage perceives the fingerprints of the Collective Unconscious on reality. This attainment provides a permanent enhancement to the mage's Supernal Vision, granting constant awareness of Supernal resonance, enchantments, Hallows, Mana flows, and active spells within sensory range. The mage also perceives Temenos resonance: which archetypes of the Collective Unconscious are "close" to a person, place, or object, and how strongly collective human belief saturates an area.
A crowded marketplace blazes with archetypal energy; a hermit's isolated cabin barely registers. A firefighter unconsciously radiates the Warrior and the Guardian. A con artist flickers between the Trickster and the Shadow. The mage cannot read specific thoughts, but she perceives the archetypal mask each person wears, whether the Collective Unconscious assigned it or the subject chose it.
The attainment's Potency equals (Prime – 1). It generates no Paradox, occupies no spell control slots, and is invisible to Mage Sight.
With Mind 1, she can identify the Virtue, Vice, and dominant emotional state of any observed subject.
The mage wraps herself in the Collective Unconscious as armor. This attainment provides a persistent magical defense equivalent to the Aegis spell (Prime 2, Shielding), granting a bonus equal to (Prime – 1) on all Clash of Wills rolls against incoming spells, supernatural powers, and hostile magical effects. The protection manifests as a barely-perceptible shimmer of overlapping silhouettes.
The Aegis activates automatically and persists for the scene. It generates no Paradox, occupies no spell control slots, cannot be dispelled or counterspelled, and is invisible to Mage Sight. It protects against all forms of magical interference: spells, Attainments, Supernal summoning effects, Numina, and Influences.
With Mind 2, the attainment additionally provides Mental Shield: protection from Goetia powers, psychic attacks, emotional manipulation by supernatural means, and hostile Mental Numina. The mage adds (Mind – 1) to Clash of Wills specifically against mental or psychic effects, stacking with the Prime-based Aegis if both apply.
The mage channels Supernal energy through the Temenos to summon a Goetia archetype and invest it with physical substance, using Prime rather than Spirit or Death to grant the Materialized Condition.
Activation. The mage spends 1 Mana and takes an instant action. She specifies a general archetypal role — Warrior, Healer, Sage, Trickster, Guardian, Lover, Creator, Destroyer, or any other broadly recognized archetype. The Storyteller determines which specific Temenos entity answers the call, selecting the archetype most resonant with the mage's need and the local Temenos ecology.
Entity Statistics. The summoned archetype arrives with Rank equal to half the mage's Prime dots, rounded up (Rank 2 at Prime 4, Rank 3 at Prime 5). It uses the standard Ephemeral Entity rules for its Rank: Attributes, Influences, Numina, Corpus, and Essence are all determined by Rank as normal. Its Influences and Numina suit the archetype it embodies: a Warrior might possess Influence (Conflict) and the Numina Blast and Armor; a Healer might possess Influence (Restoration) and Numina Heal and Cleanse.
Duration. The entity persists for a Duration equal to (Prime – 1) steps on the Duration chart: typically one scene at Prime 4 or one day at Prime 5. The mage may dismiss the entity as an instant action at any time.
Behavior. The summoned archetype acts independently. It cooperates because it was called by someone who understands and respects the Collective Unconscious, and it is not magically compelled. If the mage commands the entity to act against its archetypal nature (ordering a Healer to kill, a Guardian to abandon its ward, a Trickster to play it straight), the entity may refuse, argue, or depart. The relationship mirrors the bond between a Persona user and their Persona.
Limitations. The mage may maintain only one summoned archetype at a time through this attainment. Summoning a second dismisses the first. The attainment generates no Paradox and occupies no spell control slots, but the entity is visible to mundane observers and may provoke Disbelief if Sleepers witness clearly supernatural behavior.
With Mind 3, two additional capabilities unlock. First, she may issue the summoned entity a complex single-task command that it will follow even if the task does not perfectly align with its nature — though commands that contradict the archetype's nature still fail. Second, she may summon an entity from a specific individual's Oneiros rather than the Temenos, pulling forth that person's personal archetypes: their Shadow, their idealized self, their repressed fears, or their buried potential. This requires the target to be within sensory range; the target may resist with a Clash of Wills using Composure + Gnosis (or Composure + Supernatural Tolerance for non-mages).
By spending 1 Mana as an instant action, the mage merges with a Temenos archetype, overlaying its Pattern onto her own. Her appearance shifts to reflect the archetype: a Warrior takes on an aura of martial authority, a Sage an air of certainty, a Trickster a slipperiness that is hard to look at directly.
Mechanical Effects. The mage gains temporary dots in two Skills appropriate to the chosen archetype, to a maximum bonus of (Prime – 1) dots. She also gains one Numen from the archetype's standard suite, usable as though she were an ephemeral entity of Rank equal to half her Prime. The transformation lasts for (Prime – 1) steps on the Duration chart.
Simultaneous Use. The mage may maintain a summoned archetype from the 3rd Attainment while simultaneously merged with a different archetype through this one. The two entities need not be related: a mage might summon the Guardian to protect allies while wearing the mask of the Destroyer to cut through opposition.
Risk. While wearing the mask, the mage's personality is subtly influenced by the archetype. Extended use may impose Conditions at the Storyteller's discretion: Obsessed, Swooned, Shaken, or Inspired as appropriate to the archetype's nature.
With Mind 4, she may merge an archetype with a willing or unconscious subject rather than herself, effectively granting temporary supernatural capabilities to an ally. An unwilling target may resist with a Clash of Wills. A Sleeper granted the Warrior's mask gains combat prowess beyond mortal limits; a Sleeper granted the Healer's mask can perform medically impossible recovery. The Sleeper does not Awaken, and she remembers the experience afterward.
The mage creates a permanent, self-sustaining Temenos archetype: a new entry in the Collective Unconscious, born from the mage's will and given Supernal substance.
Activation. The mage spends 1 Mana and performs a ritual lasting one scene. She defines the new archetype's concept, Influence, and general nature. At the ritual's completion, the entity manifests as a Rank 2 Goetia with stats appropriate to its concept. It enters the Temenos and becomes part of humanity's shared consciousness. The entity is not bound to the mage and may develop its own agenda over time, though it begins favorably disposed toward its creator.
Significance. Any human who sleeps, dreams, or engages in creative thought is influenced by the new archetype. Over months or years, the archetype may grow in Rank as human consciousness engages with the concept it embodies. Example archetypes: The Whistle-Blower, The Open-Source Contributor, The Stranger Who Helps.
Limitation. The mage may create no more than one archetype per story. The creation is irrevocable — once released into the Temenos, the archetype cannot be recalled or unmade by its creator.
With Mind 5, she may perform a variant of this ritual that targets a specific Sleeper, granting her permanent attunement to the Temenos. The subject does not Awaken, but becomes a Sleepwalker with an additional capability: she can perceive Temenos Goetia in Mental Twilight, communicate with archetypes, and sense the Collective Unconscious in her dreams. She gains the Unseen Sense merit attuned to Goetia.
She is never Asleep again. The subject may resist with a Clash of Wills if unwilling. Applied repeatedly across a community, this attainment could create a network of Temenos-attuned Sleepwalkers.
Concepts & Story Hooks
The Community Organizer
A Free Council mage who works as a union rep or tenant advocate by day. She sees the archetypes her community members embody — the Mother, the Rebel, the Martyr — and summons those archetypes as allies in both magical and mundane struggles. Her Oblations involve attending community meetings, and a rally puts a thousand Sleepers around her, unconsciously fueling the Temenos with collective will.
The Archivist of the Dreaming
A scholar obsessed with cataloguing every entity in the local Temenos. She maintains a meticulous database cross-referencing archetypes across cultures, tracks how pop culture changes the Temenos in real time, and worries that the wrong meme could create a Temenos entity nobody is prepared for. She fears an archetype born from collective despair, feeding on doomscrolling.
The Demon Negotiator
A mage who treats Temenos entities as equals deserving of respect. He negotiates with archetypes rather than commanding them, building a network of alliances across the Collective Unconscious. His methods mirror the tradition of demon negotiation: persuasion, bribery, philosophical debate, and the occasional bluff. Some archetypes consider him a friend. Others consider him a fool. All of them take his calls.
The Mask Collector
A street artist who creates physical masks for every archetype she's encountered. Her studio is her sanctum, covered floor-to-ceiling with painted faces. Each mask is a Yantra, but also a work of art that Sleepers find inexplicably moving, as though they're looking at something they've always known.
