Ashes of Memory
4,000 Experience
You kneel in the ruin, take a pinch of ash on your tongue, and someone else’s lifetime settles over yours.
The Borrowing
As a swift action, gain one feat from your list for 1 minute per point of Intelligence modifier (minimum 1 minute). You may do this a number of times per day equal to 1 + 1 per 6 Hit Dice. HD on this sheet means effective Hit Dice: character level + Tier.
Only one Borrowing runs at a time — borrowing again ends the one before it. You count as meeting the borrowed feat's prerequisites while it lasts. If the feat builds on a class feature you lack, the memory supplies that feature as if you were a member of its class of half your character level (minimum 1) for the duration; where the feature belongs to more than one class, you choose which. The memory never supplies spellcasting or any other ability to cast spells or manifest powers — a borrowed feat that keys off casting works only on casting you already have. When the duration ends, the feat and anything it alone supplied end with it. Daily uses of a supplied class feature are tracked for the day, not per Borrowing.
Starter list: Weapon Focus (Spear), Martial Weapon Proficiency, Armor Focus (Breastplate), Skill Focus (Heal / Diplomacy / Perception), Extra Mercies, Extra Lay on Hands, Lightning Reflexes, Combat Reflexes, Spell Focus (Fire).
The Dredge
What burned here left more than ash.
Spend one minute in concentration at a specific place, or within 30 feet of a specific person. This does not spend a use of the Borrowing. If there is something worth knowing, the GM tells you at least one true, specific thing you could not otherwise have learned. If there is nothing, you know it at once and the minute is not spent. A place or person you have Dredged yields nothing further, whether it yielded anything or not, until events write something new into it; the GM rules when it has.
When a Dredge uncovers the memory of a talent, you may add one feat drawn from that memory to your list — you propose it, the GM approves it. You may hold a number of Dredged feats equal to 3 + your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1), increasing by +1 for every 5 character levels; at your cap, adding a new feat means removing a Dredged one. The starter list sits outside this cap.
Feats
These Feats modify Ashes of Memory.
| Feat | Effect |
|---|---|
| Grace of the Past (Su) | While the Borrowing is active, gain the granted powers of the Protection domain as a cleric of your character level. Their own uses per day do not limit you while the Borrowing lasts. |
| Improved Memory (Su) | Choose two feats instead of one. |
| Shared Memory (Su) | Up to your Charisma modifier touched creatures (minimum 1) also gain each feat you chose. Touch them at any point while the Borrowing lasts; each touch is a move action. They count as meeting the feat's prerequisites as you do; the memory supplies a class feature only to you. Their copies end when yours does. |
